Grief Recovery classes

1-on-1 Online, Weekly Grief Recovery Classes

Seven to ten weekly meetings with Chaplain Barbel Wray, one on one, from wherever you have an internet connection.

Chapter 01

When love is still unfinished

Grief is love unfinished. It is the things we wish had been better, different or more in a relationship that may have been great or awful. It grows out of losses of every kind: death, divorce, miscarriage, moving, loss of health, loss of trust, loss of a dream, and relationships that never reached an ending.

Grief is as personal as a fingerprint. Sometimes we can't cry, and other times we can't stop. We can feel numb and empty, lose our concentration, sleep badly, and ride a rollercoaster of emotions without knowing what to do with any of them. However we feel is okay. What matters is what we do with our feelings, and without tools and support we usually go in circles.

There are no stages in grief to move through. It is the unfinished things that keep us stuck: when our heart is broken, when life doesn't look the way we thought it would, when our miracle didn't happen, when the ones we thought would fight for us didn't, when we thought they would stay and they didn't. This work is for your healing, and it does not depend on whether the person is still in your life, or living.

How the seven to ten weeks work

You and Barb meet 1-on-1 online, on Zoom, every week for 7 to 10 weeks, adjusted to what you are needing. The first two or three weeks run about an hour. After that she sets aside two hours so you have the time to share your completed homework. The course is based on The Grief Recovery Handbook©, the program began in 1977, and it is now evidence-based.

The classes are action-oriented. Each week teaches specific tools for finding completion in an unfinished relationship, and you do the homework between meetings, printed out or written in a scribbler. You work through at least three relationships. Barb has found that the only time the program has not worked is when someone doesn't do the homework, and she will gently hold you accountable. If questions come up during the week, you can email her.

You will need a smartphone, and a headset with a microphone for Zoom. Join five minutes early to check your sound, and find a quiet corner where you will not be interrupted. If the internet drops, Barb will phone you to finish the appointment, anywhere within North America, so give her a number where she can reach you.

Chapter 03

After the last session

When the homework is complete, you decide whether you have more than the three required relationships to finish. Barb then asks for a confidential evaluation online at The Grief Recovery Institute®, and gives you a Certificate of Achievement so you can give yourself credit for the hard work.

If a new loss is on the horizon, alumni consults are available to help with upcoming losses. Grief Recovery Method® support groups of 7 to 10 weeks are also available on request, for anyone who would rather do this work alongside others.

The first step is a free, confidential 45 minute consult on Zoom. You share what you are comfortable sharing, Barb explains how the tools and her support can help, and together you see whether you are a good fit.

Leading Grief Recovery Method® classes since 2004, 1-on-1 online since 2018.
