Computer Tutoring (PC)
Computer lessons at your pace, one person at a time
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more on a PC. Setting up a smart phone. Learning the basics.
Chapter 01
Who these lessons are for
Computer tutoring is on Barb's services list in three plain lines: PC programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint and more; setting up a smart phone; and learning the basics. That covers a lot of ground, from someone who has never typed a letter on a computer to someone who knows the screen but wants to build a spreadsheet that adds itself up.
Barb has taught computer lessons individually to people of various ages. Her training also includes various computer software programs.
If you feel behind everyone else on technology, this is not a place where that is a problem. Asking the same question twice is allowed.

What a patient one-on-one lesson can cover
With Word, that might be writing a letter, saving it where you can find it again, and putting a page into shape. With Excel, entering numbers, adding a column and making a simple list you can sort. With PowerPoint, building a few slides for a talk, a family event or a group you volunteer with. The topics follow what you want to do, not a fixed syllabus.
Learning the basics can mean the mouse, the keyboard, files and folders, and getting around a screen without fear of breaking something. Setting up a smart phone is its own lesson: getting it working the way you want, one setting at a time, with someone next to you instead of a manual.
Lesson length and how often you meet are worked out together, so ask in the free 45 minute consult on Zoom how it would work for you. Tutoring is one of the inquiry types you can choose on the consult form.
Chapter 03
Why it sits next to grief recovery
It may look like an odd neighbour to grief classes, and it is more connected than it appears. The 1-on-1 online Grief Recovery classes run on Zoom. Clients need a smartphone, and a headset with a microphone, and a computer is helpful for the homework though not necessary. For someone new to all of that, a few lessons first may take some of the worry out of showing up to class.
That is also the honest limit of this page. Tutoring is a practical service, not a program with promised results. Tell Barb what you want to be able to do, and she will tell you whether she can help.
Barb has taught individual computer lessons to people of various ages, and leads her own 1-on-1 classes on Zoom.
What to have ready
- The device you want to learn on, or the new smart phone still in its box.
- One thing you wish you could do today, in a sentence.
- A pen and a scribbler for notes. Grief Recovery homework can be kept in one too.
